The Talk Every Parent Must Have Before Their Child Goes Online
Before your child gets their first device, there's a conversation that could change everything. Most parents skip it. Here's exactly what to say.
We teach kids to look both ways before crossing the street. We teach them not to talk to strangers. But when it comes to the internet — arguably the most complex and potentially dangerous environment they’ll ever navigate — most parents hand over a device and hope for the best.
Here’s the conversation you need to have first.
Start with Curiosity, Not Rules
Ask your child: ‘What are you excited to do online?’ Listen fully. Then ask: ‘What do you think could go wrong?’ You’ll be surprised what they already know — and what blindspots they have.
The Three Things That Never Change
No matter how the internet evolves, these three principles stay true:
- Once it’s online, it’s forever. Photos, messages, comments — all of it can be screenshotted and shared beyond your control.
- People aren’t always who they say they are. This applies to adults and other kids alike.
- Your discomfort is data. If something online makes you feel weird, scared, or uncomfortable — that feeling is telling you something important. Come to me.
The Most Important Thing You Can Say
‘If you see something that upsets you, or if you make a mistake online, you can always come to me. I won’t take your devices away as punishment. I want to help you figure it out together.’
That promise — and keeping it — is the foundation of digital safety for children.
