Getting Your Home Ready for Baby: 10 Things to Do Before the Big Arrival

You don’t need to completely renovate your house before your baby arrives.

Despite what social media might make it look like, you don’t need a picture-perfect nursery, matching storage baskets or an entire room filled with baby gadgets.

But there are a few simple things you can do to make those first few weeks at home feel a little less chaotic.

Because once the baby arrives, you’ll probably have other things on your mind — like figuring out why someone so tiny needs so many diaper changes.

Here are 10 simple ways to get your home ready.

1. Prepare a Comfortable Sleeping Space

Your baby doesn’t need a fancy room to begin with.

Start by preparing a suitable and safe sleeping space based on current infant sleep recommendations and your family’s needs.

Keep the area clean, organised and easy for you to access — especially during those middle-of-the-night wake-ups.

2. Create a Simple Diaper-Changing Station

You don’t need a professionally designed changing room.

A simple, organized space with essentials nearby can make diaper changes much easier.

Keep things such as diapers, wipes, a changing mat and spare clothes within easy reach.

Trust us — when you’re holding a wiggly baby, you won’t want to search through five different drawers.

3. Organize Baby Clothes

Instead of washing and organising every single baby item you own, start with a manageable amount.

Sort clothes by size and keep the items you’re likely to use first somewhere easy to reach.

Babies grow quickly, so you may not need everything available at once.

4. Make Feeding Time Easier

Think about where you might feed your baby.

Whether you plan to breastfeed, bottle-feed or combine different approaches, having a comfortable and organised space can help.

You might keep useful items nearby, such as:

  • Burp cloths
  • Bibs
  • Water for yourself
  • Feeding supplies
  • A comfortable pillow or support

And maybe your phone charger.

Because once you’re comfortable with a sleeping baby in your arms, you may not want to move.

5. Stock Up on Everyday Essentials

You don’t need to turn your home into a supermarket.

But having a reasonable supply of everyday essentials can save you unnecessary trips during the first few weeks.

Think about items your household uses regularly — not just baby products.

Simple things like easy meals, household supplies and toiletries can be surprisingly helpful when your schedule suddenly changes.

6. Prepare Some Easy Meals

You may not always feel like cooking after a long night with a newborn.

Before baby arrives, consider preparing or planning a few easy meals.

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy.

Simple, nourishing food that can be quickly prepared or reheated may be more than enough.

Future-you may be very thankful.

7. Make Important Items Easy to Find

Choose one place for important things such as:

  • Healthcare and appointment information
  • Emergency contacts
  • Baby-related documents
  • Important phone numbers

You don’t want to be searching through drawers when you’re tired and trying to remember where you put something.

A little organisation now can save a lot of stress later.

8. Think About Visitors Before Baby Arrives

Everyone will be excited to meet the baby.

But it’s okay to think about what you want too.

You and your partner may want quiet time to rest, recover and adjust to life with a newborn.

Talk about visitors before the baby arrives. Decide what feels comfortable for your family.

There is no rule that says you need to entertain everyone immediately after becoming parents.

9. Make Your Everyday Spaces More Comfortable

Think about where you spend most of your time.

Your bedroom? Living room? Dining area?

You may want to create small, practical spaces where you can easily access basic baby supplies.

The goal isn’t to have a perfect home.

The goal is to make daily life a little easier.

10. Accept That Your Home May Not Stay Perfect

This might be the most important preparation of all.

Your house may become messier.

Laundry may suddenly multiply.

You might find baby socks in places where baby socks should never be.

And that’s okay.

A home with a baby doesn’t need to look perfect.

It needs to work for your family.

So prepare what you can, keep things simple and remember:

you don’t have to get everything right before the baby arrives.

You’ll adjust, reorganize and learn what works once your little one is finally home.

And somewhere between the laundry, bottles and late-night feeds, your house will slowly become something new.

Home. With baby.

Medical & Safety Note: Home preparation should include following appropriate infant safety recommendations. For questions about safe sleep, baby-proofing or newborn care, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
