If you’re feeling nervous, excited, confused or all three at the same time — you’re not alone.

Preparing for a baby isn’t just about buying things.

Here are eight other things you can prepare before your little one arrives.

 1. Learn the Basics — But Don’t Overload Yourself

It can be helpful to learn some basic newborn-care skills before the baby arrives.

For example, you may want to understand the basics of:

  • Diaper changing
  • Feeding
  • Bathing
  • Soothing a crying baby
  • Safe sleep practices

But try not to turn preparation into an exam.

You don’t need to memorise every possible parenting situation.

Start with the basics. You’ll continue learning once your baby is here.

2. Ask Questions During Your Healthcare Visits

If you’re unsure about something, ask.

There are no bonus points for pretending you already know everything.

Write down questions as they come to mind and bring them up during appropriate healthcare appointments.

Sometimes one clear answer can save you hours of late-night internet searching.

3. Prepare Your Support Team

Who can you call when you need help?

It might be your partner, parents, siblings, friends or healthcare professionals.

Think about the people who can support you emotionally or practically after the baby arrives.

Sometimes help means holding the baby.

Sometimes it means bringing food.

And sometimes it means telling you,

“Go take a shower. I’ve got this.”

All of it counts.

4. Talk About Responsibilities

Before baby arrives, talk with your partner about everyday responsibilities.

Who might handle certain tasks?

How will you share nighttime duties?

What happens when one of you feels completely exhausted?

You don’t need a perfect schedule.

But having the conversation before you’re both tired can make it easier to work things out later.

5. Prepare for Plans to Change

You may have a detailed birth plan.

A feeding plan.

A sleeping plan.

A “my baby will definitely…” plan.

And then your baby may have completely different ideas.

Planning is helpful, but flexibility is also important.

Sometimes adjusting your expectations is part of becoming a parent.

6. Know Where to Find Reliable Help

The internet is full of parenting advice.

Some of it is helpful.

Some of it is confusing.

Some of it may leave you wondering why babies apparently need 47 different products.

Before baby arrives, identify reliable sources of information and know where to seek professional advice when needed.

This can help you feel less overwhelmed when questions come up.

7. Prepare Yourself for the Emotional Side of Parenthood

You may feel happy.

You may feel nervous.

You may feel exhausted.

You may even feel all of these emotions before lunchtime.

Becoming a parent is a big life change.

Try to give yourself permission to feel whatever you’re feeling without expecting yourself to handle everything perfectly.

8. Stop Waiting to Feel “100% Ready”

This one might be the hardest.

You may keep thinking:

“Once I know a little more, then I’ll feel ready.”

But parenthood doesn’t always work like that.

You learn by doing.

You learn by observing your baby.

You learn through mistakes, questions, conversations and experience.

And slowly, one day, you’ll realize that the things that once felt completely unfamiliar are now simply part of your everyday life.

You’ve Got More Time Than You Think — And Less Pressure Than You Feel

You don’t need to become a parenting expert before your baby arrives.

Prepare the basics.

Ask questions.

Accept help.

Learn what you can.

And leave room for the fact that some things can only be learned once your baby is actually here.

Take a deep breath.

You’re allowed to be new at this.

After all, your baby is new at being a baby too.
